Hexvoyant

Local binary analysis. Built with Rust.

Desktop / setup guide

Your first local analysis.

Build the native macOS app, then explore our owned fixture. You need Rust, Xcode Command Line Tools, and Python 3. No App Store account is needed.

First desktop session

Source-build alpha. Public source links are not configured yet; use the reviewed source folder supplied by the maintainer. Public binary downloads are not available. Dependency notice/advisory review and distribution checks remain release gates.

In Terminal, open the repository folder containing Cargo.toml. With the prerequisites installed, run these commands. The first Rust build may take several minutes and fetch dependencies; -j 2 limits concurrent build jobs.

./fixtures/demo-target/build.sh
cargo run --locked -j 2 -p hexvoyant-desktop -- fixtures/demo-target/build/hexvoyant-demo

The first command builds the fixture as analysis input. The second launches Hexvoyant, which reads that input without executing it. Keep the fixture and project files together for the session.

Optional walkthrough · try the tester tasks unaided first
  1. Identify it. In Overview, find the format, architecture, and SHA-256. Use the Standard profile for code views; Quick skips disassembly.
  2. Find a string. Open Strings, press ⌘F, and search for HEXVOYANT_BENIGN_DEMO_NO_NETWORK. Select its location and switch to Hex bytes.
  3. Follow a function. Search Symbols for main (it may be named _main), select its address, then open Disassembly and Control flow. Choose Whole Function for the bounded graph. Addresses and counts vary by compiler; a source-level conditional can also become branchless instructions.
  4. Keep a note. At a selected address, use Annotate, enter a note and bookmark, and choose Apply to Project. Save with ⌘S. Open Project asks for the manifest and then the matching original binary; keep the companion report artifact too.
  5. Export evidence. Use Export Report to create a new Markdown file. This analysis export is separate from your saved annotation project. Review paths and extracted strings before sharing anything.

Findings are conditions, not verdicts. Unknown, skipped, and truncated results do not mean a file is safe. Hexvoyant is not a security sandbox; use only the owned fixture for this introductory test.

Setup or navigation trouble?
  • Missing tools: install the repository-selected Rust toolchain, Xcode Command Line Tools, and Python 3 before building. The source instructions do not require a signed app download.
  • Project will not reopen: select the same original binary, not a rebuild; its full hash must match. Keep the project manifest and its companion report artifact in place.
  • Text is small: use View → Interface size. Filters are remembered separately in each analysis view; clear the current filter with ×.
  • Website preview: run npm run dev from the repository root, or serve site/ with Python. Node/npm are optional and are not needed for the native app. If port 4173 is occupied, use the existing preview or choose another port.
